Hi all, I’ve no idea if this is possible but figured I’d see if anyone has done anything similar. Here’s the problem: basically I have a tv that I sometimes plug into my desktop pc in my room. Problem is when I do so I have to manually move cables around to remove the desktop monitors and then I need a mouse and keyboard to get into steam big picture. If anything breaks along the way I need to use a keyboard and mouse again. What I’d like to do is somehow be able to say under certain conditions only use the tv as a monitor otherwise ignore it and vice versa so I don’t have to unplug it or replug it every time I switch between my desk or my couch. Another want is to have it boot straight to big picture when and only when my tv is connected. I suspect this is something I could solve with scripting? Just would need to know where to look. Also could possibly dual boot say bazzite but that wouldn’t be a full solution. I do have another pc that I’ve slowly accumulated from upgrades but the 7700xt isn’t really a 4k card. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

I’d wanted to jump to Linux since the 90s, but it was never quite there for me, plus my day jerb requires me to be on Windows. I finally started ripping the band-aid off a couple years ago and it’s been amazing. I received a private message in response to a long-running issue I was having with my dGPU, and that person absolutely got me squared away by suggesting I give Aurora Linux a try for use cases.

Trying to update && upgrade but getting that error. I’m not sure how it happened but should I just manually add the DNS record for ports.ubuntu.com? I’m using pi-hole. I’m worried this is a MITM attack or some hacker trying to push malware. Does anyone have experience with this?

I got fedora KDE with surface-kernel working but the touchscreen usability is LACKING. is there a way to improve the touch interface?

I need to be able to launch a program in the background, make it persist after the “parent” terminal closes and be able to access its stdin/stdout from another terminal. I don’t care about multiplexing.

I’m looking into a new tablet and it seems like grabbing a surface is a more affordable option to an iPad or other high end tablet. I can grab a decent one on marketplace for under $200 us. Is it worth it?

Is anyone else anxious about effortlessly running Android games & apps on Linux?

I am about to set up a cloud instance with linux operating system, and the common choice here normally would be ubuntu. But since they failed their newest release, and I have the option of going fedora or debian. What would you guys recommend for server?

My life is generally Mac and Thunderbolt centric and I’m trying to bring it into the Linux world. The work flow on the Mac goes immediate storage goes onto a 2TB external NVME, then to one of the two drive 4TB drives on my OWC open dock, then moves into a 16TB soft RAID array, and backup is on a 16TB HW raid all are thunderbolt enclosures. The issue I have is that mdam doesn’t work on either my Trixie or 26.04 install so I can’t convert my existing soft RAID to anything readable.

I know I’m not the only one that said this but I really can’t stand how systemd is becoming “the norm” init system for every major distro, this is bad.

I hate when people keep repeating the myth that Linux is more secure than X OS without any understanding of how much Linux gets exploited.

Linux is cool, I can do a lot of things with it. If i set a config file in Linux, I am damn sure that it is ran every single time. The code does what you tell it to do.

I think I’ve read in Lemmy somewhere that the T14 notebooks should be avoided is they come with letters after the T14. I’m thinking of buying a T14s G5. It has to be new as we get tax deduction (will be at the reception of small local museum). What do people this of this notebook. I’ll end up installing Linux on it. I was thinking of going DELL as I’ve been running various latitudes over the years without major problems but looks like people are not fond of DELL + Linux. Any thoughts?

On my system, I wanted Firefox profiles to feel like their own browser instances. Meaning, their own app icons and to not be grouped together. Almost like how it is on MacOS.

So i currently use labwc alongside the swaybg tool and pcmanfm-qt via –desktop flag for Desktop Icons :D No Issues so far with both of the Tools of course :P Except for the Fact that i can have only either Desktop Icons via pcmanfm-qt –desktop or the swaybg Background :( Am i simply doing something wrong by Chance? O.o I have both in my autostart but only the Wallpaper will run by Default :(

Hey, folks I’m moving my main PC to linux soon, and for that I have settled on Mint. However, I also plan to build a homelab pc for the first time to selfhost some services, mainly Jellyfinn, some game servers, and possibly next cloud, but I’m unsure which distro to go with for that.

Need somewhere to jump ship if Google decides to break FluffyChat or KeePassDroid on developer doomsday.

Hi everyone, I am using Ubuntu since version 14.04 due to ROS and am therefore mostly familiar with its components, such as Apt, systemd, networking etc. nowadays ROS is mostly handled in docker so I have less reason to stick to Ubuntu. Cachyos sounds fun and I am a big proponent of performance being taken seriously in the sense of UX. Also default BTRFS seems nice. How much pain is it to switch? I tend to tinker a bit and appreciate the large community around Ubuntu. I know arch has a good wiki. This is for my personal main pc and usecases are Steam and Lutris gaming, office work and ROS / c++ coding

Mint is a goto debian distro, but I switched from Debian unstable to mint and my experience is worse. PulseAudio is wierd, when suspensing last 1 sec of audio loops, crashes, Mint is based on testing irc.

It’s rare I need to reboot a locked up system but I’d like to have the option available if it should happen.

I was browsing around and found this https://github.com/NexusOne23/noid-privacy-linux a tool written in bash to audit your linux system and generate an AI prompt to help you fix these issues, it looks pretty cool overall but im not very trusting when it comes to these types of tools.
