The way the commercialization of LLMs just ruined the word AI, word processors have been using AI in other ways for ages

People don’t realise that there’s more to AI than LLMs and chat bots, and that plenty of software has been using AI (machine learning, neutral networks, forecast modeling, etc) for at least a decade or two.

Because back then it isn’t a keyword smack across industry, not intrusive, without threatening every employees that they might left out, and no chip shortage. It’s a branding, you can’t blame people for not knowing.

But this is a bit pedantic, people refer to GenAI when they say AI, you can blame corporations for using it as a magic word for investors

Technically a portable implementation of AI, so you can say to the boss you’re working with AI right now.

That’s a technicality. The term AI do encompass a TON of things, but it is as irrelevant as saying “crypto” isn’t just the scam machine we know. For most people, it is. And for most people, AI is “Gemini/Claude/ChatGPT”. And telling them the difference isn’t gonna matter at all.

I wonder if some people compiled a list of terms that got so removed from their actual meaning because of advertisement/commercial use. Like, “wifi” is synonymous to “wireless internet access” to so many people, and yet it’s actually not.

Maybe, but i guess that has also to do with the fact, that a lot of companies don’t seem to have any idea what the legitimate use case could be, so they throw it everywhere and see where it sticks. Which kinda reminds me of the company i’ve worked for several years ago, which was basically just “let’s throw GPS data onto a map and see what happens” for 20 years, and was struggling when logistics companies wanted a bit more than just a damn map. They had to rework the entire interface.

Only a matter of time until all the “chatbox with addons” providers go down the drain…

It’s among the more annoying parts of the whole AI thing, amid an ocean of things too-concerning-to-be-annoying.

“AI” / llm’s, are not artificial intelligence in the way laypeople mean it, and in the sense that LLM’s are AI - we’ve had AI for decades. Occasionally I’ll be socializing with someone I consider very intellgenet (e.x. recently, a chemical engineer) who was telling me how they just learned AI’s ‘just predict the next word’, and it just bugs me so so much how little people understand these things.

Like, they are ruining our world. Climate, commerce, security - everything is going to get a LOT shittier. And you don’t understand at a basic level how it works. It’s just sad.

Ahem. I think you mean SI /s

It’s incredible how far we’ve got, as far as technology goes. A few months ago, we had to fight to get a device that would not connect to the internet. And now we’re fighting to find software that actually do what it’s supposed to do, and don’t do what it’s not supposed to do.

Can’t wait for the next step. Heck, can’t even imagine what it will be at this point.

Business ruins everything. All they care about is stealing everything.

It should also be a feature to have no AI used in the production. No AI assets, no AI concept art, no AI code, I don’t want any of that slop touching my software

I really need to work on my 100% slop-free OS. The bulk of the work is getting a clean kernel setup, the compiler and libc working, and that’s about it; the rest is easy.

P.S. wow you’re me but a cis dude

Nice! Will it be a Linux distro, or its own thing? And if it is its own thing, how will it handle things from other OS, like exe from windows?

Also, when you say I am you, do you mean from my profile description we are the same? :3c

The Linux kernel is tAInted, so it would need to be forked. My current top choice is the NetBSD: it isn’t going anywhere, and it’s untainted.

I also looked at Redox (sadly Rust is tAInted, so it’s a no-go), and Haiku (which is just… a little too obscure). GNU Hurd is tAInted too, and isn’t as good of a kernel, so if I’m gonna clean up a kernel, it’ll be Linux. Otherwise, it’s gonna likely gonna be NetBSD.

So… not really a Linux distro, I’d say, but definitely a Unix-like OS.

As for software from other operating systems, it depends on the kernel I choose. If it’s a Linux fork, I’ll be super careful to keep it compatible with the Linux ABI. If it’s NetBSD, there’s compat_linux for Linux binaries. I believe Wine has taken an anti-"AI” stance, so Windows should be alright—if not: old versions exist.

As for your last question: I’m a transfemme (our main difference), (anarcho, probably)-communist, bi/pan, polyamorous, anti-"AI” programmer (who is very open to DMs (I’m lonely af)) :3

It already is and has been for a while… it’s not rare to see “No AI” or “fully human made” on all kinds of things. Games, programs, videos etc.

This is a good reminder to finally dl it and bite the learning curve.

If you’re familiar with pre-Office365 software then it’ll feel a little intuitive already.

That makes me feel better… I disliked office 365. How does it compare with keyboard shortcuts? I barely use the mouse these days.

As a side note, damn we are an old bunch here.

I wasn’t much of a power user to begin with but the Calc and Impress programs felt almost the same with some minor UI changes that take some getting used to like having to open a pop up settings menu rather than check the tools ribbon.

Oh man. I’ve never considered myself a power user. Mice are uncomfortable for me, trackpads are much better but I learned excel before I got a laptop.

It certainly is. If you wanna feel like you’ve rewound 10 years in the past, you gotta pony up. And even still everything feels wrong.

But in the interim, before the bubble pops, I do see the value in having no AI as a feature, especially when the immediate alternative is “go fuck yourself”.

One payment for actual slop removal, priced by devs properly to allow them somewhat equivalent revenue compared to if you were being data harvested - that’s basically the only good way to do it if we’re gonna do it.

No micro transactions and no double or triple or quadruple or quintuple or sextuple dipping on larger payments either.

When did everything become a fever dream?

also gluten free

Oh thank goodness! I can’t use Microsoft Office because of my gluten allergy…

And Open Office is just so high in sodium…

I am still on open office, no ai there that I’m aware of.

Probably because Apache only makes a minor point release every couple years. 😆 Nobody actually uses Apache OpenOffice.

LibreOffice says “Free and private office suite, no forced AI” but iirc their contribution guidelines are ai permissive.

I don’t know, Integration with a local instance of ollama from an open source text editor it would be perfectly fine for me. I write enough that a grammar-aware typo correction would be awesome. At work I find Gmails AI suggestions quite useful, especially when writing in languages where i am not fluent. That buy open source and self hosted? Yes, please.

The thing is… this setup works. But is it good? I too find text corrections to be a great application, but thinking about it I’m just blindly accepting most suggestions. I use that tool because I’m not confident enough to double-check my spelling and grammar, so naturally I can’t really double check the tool’s output either.

In areas where I’m way more knowledgeable, the usefulness seems to vanish. Namely, writing code. It’s doing really silly, yet valid things. The only difference is that I can spot them in this case, while on text correction I can’t.

AI is shit. AI is decent.? When… People will argue.

Let’s be honest and speak about it. IF and “AI” analyses and soley discusses what’s going on on your machine with no outbound channels while recommending when a appointment is in your calendar, how much of a check you should pay, or why your invite to the pool on Sunday interferes with your date night… The AI is “bad” for using resources. Way worse if it consults resources.. it won’t for those tasks though. It will for image generation. (Should likely never happen). So honestly, if you were to say what you hate about it outside of public opinion, what is it? The theft of ideas? Makes sense. The theft of property 100%. Now that it’s done.. what does a person do?

What in the actual fuck are you even saying?

Shoulda had ai write that mess

“AI, what do you want me to say?”

Soapy tiddies

I mean I’d check it out or whatever

The worst part about this comment is that it says “edited” in the top. So this guy wrote the comment, posted it, read it back, realized that he needs to fix it, edited it, presumably looked it again and decided “yup, that’s what I want to say” and sent it.

“I said a whole lot of nonsense. Whoops! Looks like a coherent thought snuck in there. Better edit that out.”

Dudes getting dunked, let up a little lmao

Oh I meant my comment as a humorous way, not in a “this guy sucks!” way lol

I did get a laugh, but if it was for me, it’d break my heart lol

I didn’t do much better up there

Yeah I get that. I have quite dead pan delivery and “blunt” humor IRL, that doesn’t translate very well over text, I really should be more mindful about that. Wouldn’t be the first, second or a hundredth time that someone mistook my stupid joke comments as a “fuck you”.

Just yesterday a guy on IRC, who I’ve talked to for months said “I never know if you are joking or pissed off” lol.

And still left “soley”.

IF and “AI” analyses and soley discusses what’s going on on your machine with no outbound channels while recommending when a appointment is in your calendar, how much of a check you should pay, or why your invite to the pool on Sunday interferes with your date night

Do you even adult dude?

Comments from other communities

You’d think that “no AI” would be an easy feature to implement, and it’s much in demand. Strange that it seems to be beyond the abilities of so many software developers.

It’s mostly just management dictating from the top-down. I’ve heard everything from “it’s our company’s direction” to “investors are only funding AI expenses” and nothing actually grounded on (B2C) customer feedback.

With the important reminder that top-management people typically have the IQ of a beetle, or less.

That’s why the CEO AI replacement sticks to cheaper models. Because they don’t need the costly “reasoning” anyway.

Colleagues in my last company are measured by their token consumption. Not how little they use, but if they use up all their budget in a month. If not, they’re obviously bad for whatever they’re measuring.

I was a software tester ages ago and I was measured by the amount of bugs I found. Didn’t matter if it was a typo or some complicated crash that only occurred when all the stars aligned. I thought it was peak idiocy back then. But this new thinking beats that by far.

Yep, tokenmaxxing is a thing at some companies now. It often aligns with the same people competing to see who can generate the most lines of slop code (losc, which is different than sloc of course).

It wasn’t long ago where people understood that every line of code you write is a line of code that could have a bug in it. The good devs still know this, but many are also being forced to generate shitty code just to appease their shitty management now.

As an aside, I have yet to see a case where tokenmaxxing generates a profit for either the consumer or the provider. It just reeks of the same “market capture at all costs” mindset that have plagued SV startups for so long.

What has been maxxing for me is reviews. And if you send me one PR with 20,000 lines of code changed, I will tell you to get fucked and break it up.

I’m so glad my position allows me to do that 😂

You would be surprised how much “We need AI to take over the world completely or there is no chance in hell to ever get our insane investments back” motivates people to push bullshit on you.

It’s more a question of agency than ability. Take this excerpt from the announcement:

For a company that sells subscriptions, an AI assistant justifies a price increase and strengthens the case for keeping all documents within its own infrastructure. The functionality and the business model reinforce each other, so integration is not only attractive but almost mandatory.

Anyone employed in such a company will have a hard time resisting. There’s a mix of unrest and despair in the discipline right now. I’ve met colleagues drastically change careers over this. Sick leaves over mental health too.

I don’t think shots were intended to be fired at the Mozilla corporation, who can’t stop talking about their default, opt-out AI, but it paints a stark picture of the difference between a company that preaches privacy and choice, versus a company that actually provides those things.

I think they’re also taking shots on telemetry. Firefox uses telemetry as evidence to support their decisions in ways that sometimes seem contrived or statistically incorrect (similar to only x% of people turned this default feature off, therefore it is good), making me feel as a user that contributing my telemetry to them is actually a bad thing that is encouraging their behaviour. Meanwhile TDF makes great software that follows what the community wants and needs without any telemetry collection.

Interesting perspective. As AI becomes more common in software development, choosing when not to use AI could become just as important as choosing when to use it

Thanks for (re?)posting this. I don’t love LibreOffice, but I do love their stance on this. I liked Microsoft Office until they added AI (and doubled the price!). They got $60 a year from me for about 10 years, but now they get nothing. I started using Apple’s iWork suite, though I don’t much like it, but Apple added AI stuff in. I’d ignore it, but around every corner it’s like “don’t you want to pay for the AI and some other crap?” No. No TF I don’t. So, I think I’ll just roll with LibreOffice.

I also appreciate that they offer torrent downloads. That allows me to download from other users, take the load off their server, and then share my download with other users. That’s always nice.
