According to a three-year review of the country’s education system that culminated in January with the release of the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM II) report, nine in 10 Filipino children can’t read and understand a simple text by age 10. The failure persists throughout high school, leaving millions of students effectively functionally illiterate by the time they graduate.

Is this satire? The headline is really obtuse.

Nah just business people with totally unhinged priorities and a basic misunderstanding of the meaning of life again.

I genuinely thought Lemmy got the domain screwed up and I was reading an Onion headline.

Someone think of the call centers!

Obviously illiteracy is something to be legitimately concerned about. But “call centers” is not the reason why.

Call centers are all moving to AI anyways, they only exist to get rid of annoying customers and don’t actually provide any help - AI can get people to give up twice as fast.

That’s mind-boggling. As I get older, I appreciate more and more the value reading provides me.

It’s a shame how many doors are going to be forever closed for these people.
